This weekend I had the pleasure of hanging with some cool people and we did brunch. On my way there I inserted this CD which I had made of mixed artists and I was grooving and one of the people said "This music is making me sleepy." I was offended inwardly as most of my circle of peeps love smooth. She proceeded to say that this music was what her mother listened to. I removed the CD immediately and I felt like shaking her. How dear you talk against the music which I adore and love deeply so much. Oh just for clarification...This lady was the same age as I.
So tell me, do any in your circles not like Smooth Jazz? Just curious.
Hi Jolly. Sorry that you had a bad experience with the type of music you like being played. I have lots of family and friends who do not share in the likes of the same music genres I enjoy. Many people do not understand that one's love for smooth jazz is just like one's love for blues, hip hop, rap, r & b, country, or gospel. I am glad to hear you maintained being an adult about the situation and played something your friend enjoyed hearing. A lot of us stereotype smooth jazz as slow and boring or hard and acid type of music. We do not go beyond the barriers of giving smooth jazz music a chance because many would find out, as I did, that smooth jazz has back-in -the-day old school tunes as well as up-to-date smooth jazz grooves as the just a few mentioned before music genres.
Hi Jolly my family loves Jazz because my father played alto sax. Some people are just very narrow minded. She could have kept her thoughts to herself. Just because people have the age doesn't mean they are adults mentally. She is very lucky that I wasn't there. Because I would have eased the volume up a little. If you love something enjoy it if others can't feel the vibe allow them to keep it moving. You are in good company because jazz has something for everyone whom will just take the time to listen. Very sorry that you had to encounter such rudeness Jolly.
I don't know anybody that likes smooth jazz or some other genres like bluegrass. That's why the internet is so cool. The only music I don't like it folk and rap. They both are about the lyrics. I don't want to have to sit there and think about the lyrics too much. Music is very personal. I'm sure your friends like something you don't. My mother had great taste in music and so did my dad. But they were'nt the same.
Hello Jolly
The family in Baltimore and DC area miss Smooth Jazz.. Smooth Jazz was for good conversation , relaxing near the water and just chiilin at home with a good bottle of wine. We still disagree about Smooth Jazz format.
I think the problem is how exactly you define somooth jazz. I have found that people of all ages do like the more modern NuJazz flavours with a good groove. I guess some of you will say that NuJazz is not Smooth Jazz but I think there is a lot of crossover.
The other thing is time and place. If you are in a mood to want to relax after a difficult day, then you are more likely to be receptive to the smoothjazz sound, even I would subscribe to that.
HELLO JOLLY,YES ME & MY FAMILY LOVES SMOOTH ,KOOL, & EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN , NO I DON'T HAVE FRIENDS THAT DOESN'T LIKE SMOOTH JAZZ, NOT IN MY CIRCLE OF FRIENDS...I HAVE A FEW JZZ BUDDIES RIGHT HERE ON SITE ,LIKE JAMES"THE DUBB" WHITE, PAUL STEVENS,JUST TO NAME A FEW..I LOVE EM..BRIAN O'NEAL IS ANOTHER ONE. NICE SMOOTH SOUND THAT YOU WOULD ENJOY
I wish more people I know did like smooth jazz. I was listening to smooth jazz at work and actually had my boss walk up to me tell me that I was an "embarrassment to my generation" for listening to smooth jazz. In his mind, smooth jazz is nothing but bad elevator music. Most everyone here listens to country, bluegrass, or rock. I like rock, too. But I also like smooth jazz, new age, classical, and some blues. I listen to different styles of music depending on the mood I am in at the time. I love ice cream but don't feel that I have to limit myself to one flavor. Having said that, I will say that my favorite style of music is smooth jazz and what I listen to most often.
