Profile Information

Favorite Smooth Jazz Artist
Amel Larrieux, Jazz-Funk( Crusaders, Greyboy Allstars, Les McCann), Incognito, Count Basic, Sade, Ronny Jordan's first 5 Albums( his best work to m..e..).. whoever inspires me. I'm actually more of an Acid Jazz person. I like Jazz "with a Funky Attitude", a "Groove". Too much of what passes for "Smooth Jazz" these days is nothing but glorified "Doctor's office-elevator music". Too bland, no Soul. No attitude. Watered-down covers of old R-and-B hits....Thank God for artists like Norman Brown and the like!!

hahahaha, plenty of people. Sorry - not directed at you :) I happen to have a friend that keeps sending me stuff about the how everything's wrong with the industry and our genre, then when I send her upbeat news she still balks at it LOL

True, but I don't fault anyone with whatever their own style is -it's subjective for sure. Things that entertain me and speak to me don't necessarily speak to the masses or the purists. We can go on all day, every day about what's good, and what's not, who ruined the format and who's keeping it going - but at the end of the day it doesn't help anything. Musician's will continue to make music that they think is their best, the public will consume what they are familiar with and those of us who are making a living working in the industry have to push forward and create a new business model to survive.

For me, I think Smooth Jazz exists on radio merely as a reminder of how great those live shows are (filled with the improvisation you crave). It's commercialized jazz for sure - but live it's so much more. Jazz was always the poor man's genre and not too many ever get rich at it, they do it because they love the art form. Smooth Jazz radio is a medium, that's all. Today there are so many other ways to deliver it to the consumer - we all just need to keep that in mind and find a way to reach the fans. We can whine and carry on and analyze -but when it comes down to it - we just need to move forward.

nah, not really. It was more about the way they were adding adult contemporary vocals in hopes for a wider audience. Jazz has always had various sub-genres and outside influences. Some of those are based on geography & demographics -south Florida has a Latin Jazz influences, urban areas tend to skew toward R & B influences, younger crowds tend to like more new agey & chill music, etc.
