I worked in Smooth Jazz radio for several years, produced numerous festivals & shows, consulted for record labels and independent artists and I've seen what works and what doesn't. Whether you are picked up by a record label or decide to go the route of the indie artist, certain elements need to be in place to promote your music. It really happens no other way.
The truth is that it's not enough these days to say 'I have great music, now I need to be booked into gigs'. You need the right marketing tools that will make people want to hire you for performances. You have 3 buyers you need to appeal to: your listening audience, the music directors at radio stations, and the talent buyers. You have to know the language they speak and what appeals to them just to get your music thru to the decision makers. There's quite a bit you need to do on your own to increase sales and get noticed.
