I was born and raised at the Jersey Shore, and have been a jack of all trades all my life. I was a boardwalk barker, short order cook on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights NJ, bartender, restaurant and bar manager, computer tech & IT guy and many other things in between. Most people have a hard time believing I was a florist for 25 years.. (A real good one) I owned my own florist for 18 of the 25 years very successfully. Being a florist was a vehicle that allowed my to express my artistic ablities (ya I have artisitc ablities). I was FTD and Teleflora's Designer of the year in 1990. However most people made comments like "Couldn't ya do something else with your life?". Well, I did have a 6 figure income and lifestyle during my tenure as a florist, so what can I say..?
What happened to the florist aspect of my life? I just wanted to do all the things I've ever wanted to do with the rest of my life and I got tired of flowers. A bitter divorce forced the closure of the florist business.. Believe me I'm still recovering from that financial debacle.
I've been a music fanatic since I was a kid. My aunt and uncle told me I should persue radio when I was a teenager. Aunt Julie and Uncle Chris, I guess this is all dedicated to you! Thank you Chris for introducing me to artists like Gato Barbieri, Ronnie Laws, Noel Pointer, & many more back in the 1970's. I was told by my uncle Chris that "jazz" was the future of music and at that point I became a "closet" jazz fan. Closet Jazz fan? Yup, more or less I had to do that because I grew up in the sex drugs & rock-n-roll era, and my friends really would have thought I was strange (I'm strange enough). As I grew older I introduced my friends to jazz/fusion & smooth jazz and that came with mixed reviews. But if there is anyone who knows me, I could care less what they thought. So I truly thank my uncle Chris Mesanko for all of this..He got it all started, and who knows where it will go!
Now, I've been doing a lot of things, currently I do some web design, I build, repair, network computers/offices and help those who need computer help when I can. I hand built, configured networked, and maintain the entire POS (Point of Sale) system at the jazz club that I manage. I design and maintain their website and myspace page as well as manage their e-mail campagin & newsletter which goes out to thousands every week. (visit dinosjazzbar.com) I hand built and installed the real time surveillance system there too. This sets me up for what I really want to do when I grow up. With a little luck, time and perserverance, I will open my own club in the next 12 months. I have 2 years of Restaurant GM experience under my belt. I have always wanted to run my own bar/retaurant. I love the work. It's kinda like getting "hit on the head" lessons, but it is rewarding for me. Some of my think I'm a little tough on them at at times but the one's who know me very well know where my heart is. I'm dedicated to the success of this club right now, and if you try and get in my way "I'll crush you like a squirrel crossing the road". On the other hand, if you are an honest and true friend and need help, I'll open my home to you and give you the shirt off my back if you need it. I'm also an information junkie, I was a Journalism/Communications major in college. I love learning new things every day so I guess it will never stop.
My latest project is smoothjazztampabay.com which takes up the rest of my free time between new music, listening, networking, development, & deciding what to play and what not to. As well as marketing the station, keeping the station updated with the latest and best configuration. I spend tons of time on this project especially the upcoming website which is extremely code intensive. I am currently learning mysql and PHP along with html and CSS so I can be well versed with what my website will need to perform well. The website will contain the best of the Tampa Bay area along with the music. It will be THE where to go in the Tampa area and what to do when you get here web site, all based on the smooth jazz lifestyle. Pretty simple huh? Hardly..It's a ton of work and I'm only touching the tip of the iceberg. My grandma gave me this advice and I still adhere to it today. " You can do what you love, or you can do it for the money" I'm trying to do both!
